A discovery in an old cellar. When I was handed this bottle and told the story I was pretty taken back. Not only was this a 1973 Greenock single vineyard wine produced from our vineyard. The wine itself had been selected by the board of Kaiser Stuhl to be served to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Kaiser Stuhl Chateau on March 21,1977. And WOW we are still producing Shiraz from this premier Estate vineyard today. Our 2013 Greenock Shiraz marks 40 years from the 1973 vintage and our 2017 marks 40 years from Her Majesty's visit. I did find photos of Queen Elizabeth II at Kaiser Sthul on searching "Queen Elizabeth Second Inspecting Kiaser Stuhl winners" It has many many more photos of Her Majesty's visit and gave us a warm feeling since we just celebrated her Birthday. I wonder what she thought of the wine? The label on the bottle only reads " Each year Kaiser Stuhl winemakers select a few vineyards which have crops of outstanding excellence. From thes only the best grapes are chosen to make the range of Kaiser Sthul Individual Vineyard Wines of rare quality.
It does not have a description of the wine itself but it does say that the wine is matured in small French Nevers casks for 18 months.
We use French Hog Heads to mature our Greenock Shiraz for 24 months so there must be some similarity in the finished wine as the patch of vines used in our vineyard are from the same blocks. It would be great to compare, but 40 years we could not make a comparison only to say it would have the same vineyard signature on today's resultant wine that is unmistakable characteristic of our Greenock vineyard.
When your out pruning you always come across our resident kangaroos. This guy did not move far as we pruned past. He has been around for years and I guess he is quiet use to us. Go back to sleep my friend and sorry for disturbing your slumber.
